Generating the Normative Samples

Visit 5
The process for deriving the Normative Sample for ARIC Visit 5 is explained in detail on page 9 of the the ARIC Visit 6 Manual 17: ARIC Neurocognitive Exam Manual from April 2017.
Visit 6
For the Normative Sample at Visit 6, we enforced exclusion criteria similar to those enforced at Visit 5. Details follow.
- Dementia Medications (Cholinomimetics) : We excluded participants taking cholinomimetics.
- History of Neurological Diagnosis : We excluded participants with a histoy of Neurological Diagnosis.
- Race : We excluded participants who were neither black nor white.
- Cognitive Decline : We excluded participants who experienced cognitive decline between Visits 5 and 6.
- Stroke : We excluded participants who had ever been hospitalized for Stroke.
- Adjudicated Cognition Status : We excluded participants who did not receive a "Normal" Adjudicated Cognition Status at Visit 6.
- Level 3 Dementia : We excluded participants with a Level 3 Dementia Status.
- APOE : We excluded APOE44 participants.
- Self-reported Memory : We excluded participants with a self-reported memory complaint.
Overall
Multiple Observations : If a participant had multiple observations, then only the earliest visit was used.
